The Mananga Experience – Our Approach to Training

Mananga’s approach to training is based on an adult learning principles and the experiential learning cycle.

* Experience: The experience stage is structured to enable participants to “do” something, such as participating in a case study, role-play, or listening to a lecture.
* Process:In this stage, participants reflect on the activity undertaken during the experience stage. They share their reactions in a structured way with other members of the group. They discuss both their intellectual/cognitive and affective/altitudinal reactions to the activities in which they have engaged. The trainer also helps participants conceptualize their reflections so they can move toward drawing conclusions.
* Generalization: In this stage, the participants form conclusions and generalizations that might be derived from, or stimulated by, the first two phases of the cycle. This stage is best symbolized by the following questions: “What did you learn from all this?” and “What more general meaning does this have for you?”
* Application: After participants have formed some generalizations, the trainer guides the participants into the application stage. They begin to incorporate what they have learned into their lives by developing plans for more effective behavior in the future.

The Mananga experience is therefore of a practical nature. Each course is based on a series of practical exercises. In line with adult learning principles, maximum use is made of syndicate exercises, case studies, field trips, role-playing, management games, plenary sessions, training videos and video playbacks and action planning. Participants are encouraged to be directly involved in analyzing and solving simulated managerial problems. In addition, the integral aspects of each course are intended to remind participants about their reintegration in their work place. Participants are thus encouraged to develop written action plans, which commit them to solving a work related problem on return to their duty station. This process develops a high level of confidence and skills to deal with actual problems in their own workplace.

The number of participants in all courses is kept to a level, which ensures maximum involvement by each course member and allows a lot of discussion with other participants and facilitators. It also ensures that the excellent library with its user-friendly cataloguing system is readily available to anyone who needs it. The computer laboratory has adequate networked stations for individual hands on key board tutorials in key applications software.

Mananga is aware of the need by present day managers to learn from technological businesses and managerial experiences of others. Apart from affording course participants a great deal of opportunity to exchange ideas with highly experienced faculty members, The Mananga Experience also brings together groups from as many as twelve nations on any course. The vast reservoir of experience represented also becomes available to all course members. The overall approach therefore is to encourage learning as a normal and continuous process that helps course delegates to cope with change, solve problems and make the most of opportunities as they arise in their organizations.

Mananga also has a very close working relationship with local companies and government institutions. This affords opportunities for Mananga participants to visit these institutions and learn first hand from the managers on the ground. It has been possible to arrange for attachments with these companies in order for participants to gain hands on experience on various management issues.
